Dallas Is Not Built For Snow
The first cons of living in Dallas Texas is that when it snows, the city of Dallas is not really built to deal with it. We don’t have snow plows. People don’t shovel their driveway. The whole city shuts down for the most part other than grocery stores.
We will put salt on highways and MAJOR roads, but even then it’s only one lane that is salted (or sand a lot of times).
You’ll also notice “Freeze Warning” signs start to pop up as a reminder to drip your faucets. Something about the pipes here in Dallas when it freezes and then thaws out – your pipes may burst. Not all the time though. But dripping your faucets certainly decreases the chances of that happening.
Dallas Public Schools
We’re talking about Dallas ISD. Now as soon as you step out to the suburbs, Dallas hosts 8 of the top 10 ranked school districts in the state of Texas. So we’re actually pretty stacked when it comes to good schools in Dallas. You just won’t find them within the confines of Dallas ISD (which is where most of the private schools are conveniently located… imagine that!).

Toll Roads
The next cons of living in Dallas Texas are the toll roads. Not a huge deal in most people’s minds but definitely another expense you’ll want to account for when deciding where you end up.
You have the Dallas North Tollway that goes straight north and south from downtown Dallas up to Frisco (and soon to extend through Prosper by 2023).
You have the Bush Turnpike on the south side of Plano.
Then you also have 121/Sam Rayburn Tollway as the border between Plano and Frisco.
Most of our clients are drawn to that north Dallas / Collin County area, but there are more in the metroplex of course.
Guns
The next cons of living in Dallas Texas is the support of the 2nd amendment. If that’s not something you agree with, then Texas probably isn’t for you frankly. Now it’s not like people go around waving their guns in the air like Yosemite Sam… but people to conceal carry.
Flat Landscape
The next cons of living in Dallas Texas is the flat landscape. If you’re looking for mountains, sorry can’t help ya there. If you’re looking for the ocean… some of the masterplanned communities have crystal lagoons, will that work?
Property Taxes
The next cons of living in Dallas Texas are the property taxes. Listen I get it, property taxes are higher in Texas compared to other states. You have to remember we don’t have the state income tax. There are also other programs you can qualify for to help knock down the damage like the Texas homestead exemption.
Foundation Issues
The next cons of living in Dallas Texas is the combination of the clay soil and extreme weather. By extreme, what I mean is sometimes there are periods of “droughts,” then you’ll look up and it’s been raining for 3 straight days! This causes the ground to shift and subsequently your concrete slab foundation to crack from time to time. What that translates to is cracks in the walls and doors not closing as flush as they usually do. Luckily though, the professionals in town are very successful at repairing foundation problems at a reasonable cost.
Hot Summer Weather
The next cons of living in Dallas Texas is the hot summer weather. If you can’t handle the heat, then stay out of the kitchen. But seriously if you can get through July and August, you’ll be just fine. Candidly I’d much rather sweat a little extra for 2 months out of the year than have to deal with an extended winter. Plus, you can catch a flight to Denver for under $100 if you need your fix 🙂
